The Seoul Subway AX (AI Transformation) 2026 initiative marks a strategic shift from traditional transit management to a data-driven ecosystem. By treating the underground network as a live laboratory, the city aims to export urban tech solutions while addressing domestic demographic pressures.
Predictive Congestion and Vision AI
The core of the 2026 roadmap involves 28 distinct AI projects designed to optimize passenger flow. High-resolution vision AI now monitors station platforms in real-time, detecting congestion patterns and automatically suggesting adjustments to train intervals. This system moves beyond Tokyo’s pilot programs for digital signage, focusing instead on deep integration with rail signaling. The goal is a "zero-incident" environment where AI identifies physical hazards: such as track obstructions or passenger distress: faster than human operators.
Labor Efficiency and Robotaxi Integration
Beyond safety, the AX initiative serves as a hedge against labor shortages. Seoul is deploying AI-driven maintenance robots for tunnel inspections and cleaning, reducing the need for high-risk manual labor.
