Mexico City Reads Delhi: You Have the Chinampas. Most of Your Schoolchildren Have Never Seen One.

Traditional chinampas agricultural plots in the Xochimilco district of Mexico City.

MEXICO CITY · April 7, 2026 : Pragati Chaswal didn’t set out to revolutionize urban agriculture; she just wanted her son to eat his broccoli. What began as a mother’s rooftop garden in Delhi evolved into the SowGood Foundation, a movement that has reached 78,000 schoolchildren across the Indian capital. This success highlights a profound truth: cities do not change through policy alone. They change when an individual follows a singular problem long enough to create a solution. For Mexico City, this provides a critical mirror. Having an agricultural heritage is not the same as utilizing it for the next generation.

Personal Motivation as Policy

Delhi’s agricultural movement was born on a private rooftop, not in a government office. Chaswal’s model focuses on "learning in the body": teaching children to pay attention to the world through the slow, physical process of growth. While Mexico City possesses the chinampas, a UNESCO-recognized marvel of ancient sustainability, most of its urban children have never touched the soil of Xochimilco. The SowGood Foundation demonstrates that the true infrastructure of a movement is not just the land available, but the personal motivation to turn that land into a pedagogical tool.

Bridging Heritage and Classroom

The disconnect in Mexico City represents a massive missed opportunity for urban pedagogy. The city already possesses the world’s most sophisticated ancestral farming system, yet it remains a distant curiosity for the youth. Delhi has proven that you do not need massive policy mandates to begin; you need the bridge from rooftop to classroom. By integrating farming into the curriculum as a way to teach empathy and care, Mexico City can transform its chinampas from a historic museum into a living laboratory for every schoolchild in the capital.
