Amsterdam reads Berlin: The €10 Train Is Europe’s New Budget Airline

AMSTERDAM · March 25, 2026 – The European rail landscape is undergoing a structural realignment as GoVolta scales its low-cost operations between Amsterdam and Berlin. With entry-level fares at €10, the Dutch startup is testing price elasticity in a market previously dominated by state incumbents and budget airlines. This shift toward "open-access" rail signals a new era for the city-pair corridor, prioritizing cost over transit velocity.

Trading Velocity for Volume
GoVolta’s strategy hinges on a high-volume model. By operating at 160 km/h, the journey to Berlin takes seven hours: nearly 80 minutes longer than ICE connections. While Deutsche Bahn uses variable pricing, GoVolta offers a transparent entry point. This trade-off targets leisure travelers who historically chose short-haul flights. By using existing infrastructure, GoVolta minimizes overhead, allowing standard tickets to average €30, undercutting competitors.

A Structural Challenge to Aviation
The Berlin and Hamburg routes directly challenge the short-haul flight paradigm. As airports face pressure to cap movements due to environmental constraints, rail startups are filling the vacuum. GoVolta’s inclusion of guaranteed seating within its base price mimics the budget airline experience without the friction of airport security. A successful expansion to Paris by late 2026 could trigger a wider modal shift across Europe's busiest transit arteries.
