Africa Grows Most of the World’s Cocoa. Origin Brands Are Finally Keeping the Story Here.

NAIROBI · April 13, 2026 : Africa provides the raw material for the world’s $100 billion chocolate industry, yet the continent has historically captured a mere fraction of its total value. This structural imbalance, where 70% of the world’s cocoa is grown in West Africa but less than 1% of the chocolate is produced there, is finally beginning to crack. As bean-to-bar production moves from a niche artisanal trend to a strategic economic shift, African producers are bypassing traditional European processing hubs to sell finished, branded goods directly to global consumers.

Reclaiming the Value Chain

For decades, West Africa: led by Ivory Coast at 45% of global output and Ghana: has served as a raw material pipeline for multinational corporations. These beans are typically shipped to European hubs like Amsterdam for roasting and grinding. However, the emergence of local processors like Ghana’s Niche Cocoa and Tanzania’s Kokoa Kamili signals a definitive departure from this model. By keeping the manufacturing process local, these companies are capturing the "value-add" that has historically enriched the Global North, ensuring industrial expertise and profits stay in the region.

The Shift to Narrative Ownership

This transition is driven by authorship as much as economics. When cocoa is exported as a generic commodity, the story is written by the importer. By branding finished products at the source, African entrepreneurs are reclaiming their identity. Today’s global consumer increasingly demands transparency and authenticity. Brands like Nigeria’s Luji’s Chocolate are proving that origin-based production isn't just possible: it's preferred. As the "processing hub" model becomes optional, the origin is finally holding the pen, writing a new future for African agriculture.
