Africa’s Biggest Urban Summit Opens Today in Nairobi. Aging Should Be on the Agenda.

Date:

Delegates and urban planners gather at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi for the opening of the second Africa Urban Forum.

NAIROBI · April 8, 2026 : The Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) today welcomes the second edition of the Africa Urban Forum (AUF), the continent’s premier gathering for urban policy and development. Running through April 10, the summit brings together heads of state, ministers, and city planners to tackle the most pressing challenges of African urbanization, primarily focusing on housing deficits and sustainable infrastructure. However, as leaders chart the future of African cities, one critical demographic shift remains largely on the periphery: the rapid aging of the continent’s population.

The Looming Demographic Shift
While current discussions are dominated by the youth bulge and the urgent need for affordable housing, the demographic landscape of 2050 tells a different story. Africa’s elderly population is projected to triple within the next three decades. Today’s forum offers a rare window for policymakers to integrate "age-friendly" design into the urban fabric. Without including senior-centric infrastructure: such as accessible public transit and specialized healthcare zones: in current master plans, cities risk building environments that will be socially and economically strained by the time they are completed.

Beyond Welfare: The Silver Economy

The forum must move beyond viewing the elderly through the lens of welfare. In global hubs like Shanghai, the "Silver Economy" is becoming a multi-trillion-dollar driver. African cities should treat aging as a market opportunity for innovation in fintech, health-tech, and inclusive housing. Integrating these themes into the AUF agenda would allow Nairobi and its peers to lead a transition toward cities that serve all generations, ensuring that sustainable development is truly inclusive.
