As AI disrupts digital communication, the value of physical proximity has skyrocketed. Singapore has capitalized on this shift, treating its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry as essential relationship infrastructure. London, despite its historical dominance and English-language advantage, remains at a crossroads. While Singapore aligns itself with a projected $1.8 trillion global market by 2031, London is still debating whether its event sector is a fundamental civic asset or a niche luxury service.
The Neutrality of Infrastructure
Singapore’s success isn’t just about high-tech venues; it is the deliberate removal of friction. In a world of increasing geopolitical volatility, Singapore effectively sells "neutrality as a product." London possesses the global connectivity and cultural depth to compete, yet it lacks the unified state-level coordination that defines the Singaporean model. Where Singapore sees a convention as a public utility for long-term economic growth, London often treats it as a private commercial venture. This structural difference determines how a city absorbs the benefits of global business and local development.
Beneath the Conference Floor
The real question for London is what the MICE economy generates for the city beneath the conference floor. Beyond hotel bookings and delegate spending, business events serve as a critical platform for knowledge exchange that AI cannot replicate. London has the talent and the "heavyweight" status, but it has not yet fully articulated the "civic" value of these gatherings. If London wants to maintain its edge against rising Asian hubs, it must decide if these events are merely luxury exports or the fundamental infrastructure of its future global relationships.
