SINGAPORE · May 7, 2026 : As generative AI renders the traditional university essay obsolete, higher education is looking backward to move forward. The viva voce, Oxford’s ancient oral examination format, is being rediscovered as the only truly AI-proof method of assessment. In Singapore, where the Ministry of Education has already deployed comprehensive AI literacy frameworks, the technical infrastructure for this shift is ready. However, the transition from paper-based excellence to oral defense poses a deeper, cultural challenge for the city-state's rigorous education system.
The Culture of Performance
Singaporean students consistently top global rankings in written assessments, yet the viva voce demands a different kind of mastery: the ability to assert and defend ideas in real-time. Unlike the "Learn for Life" initiatives that have successfully reduced mid-year exam stress, the oral exam requires a shift from rote mastery to intellectual performance under pressure. This is a cultural skill that Singapore’s classroom environment, historically focused on technical precision and deference to authority, has not systematically prioritized.
The Scalability of the Ancient
The primary hurdle for oral exams has always been human capital and cost. However, a recent pilot at New York University suggests a scalable path forward. By using AI to conduct tailored oral assessments, NYU reduced costs to just 42 cents per student. For Singapore’s elite institutions like NUS and NTU, the challenge is no longer technological or financial. The immediate goal is to rebuild a pedagogical framework that makes students comfortable performing knowledge under direct challenge.
